Over 90 area high school students will display their creativity at the 9th Annual Project G.R.I.L.L. Unveiling event scheduled for Friday, May 12. The unveiling event will take place in the Festival Foods parking lot (1125 E. Johnson Street, Fond du Lac) from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
This event is free and open to the public. Enjoy lunch from the brat barn – with proceeds benefiting the Project G.R.I.L.L. program – and check out the handcrafted grills on display that were entirely designed and fabricated by area high school students. New this year is the “Community Choice” award. The public is invited to cast their vote for their favorite grill from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. with a chance to win one of four Festival Foods gift cards. Student team captains and manufacturing representatives will evaluate the grill designs ultimately awarding the “Best of Show” award for the most creative and best built grill. Award winners will be announced at the unveiling event at 12:30 p.m. and on KFIZ AM 1450 following the event.
The Project G.R.I.L.L. Unveiling event is the culmination of a nine-month program in which students in area high school technical education classes are paired with local manufacturers to build grills from scratch. During their journey, the students learn all facets associated with building a product, from concept through production. The students also tour the nine participating manufacturing businesses to learn first-hand about local career opportunities. The program strives to develop a strong future workforce by positively showcasing careers in manufacturing and exposing students to a wide variety of valuable skill sets. Skills learned throughout the process include welding, use of computer-aided design (CAD) software, project management and problem solving, to name a few.
