Car Seat Recycle Day April 22

Leadership Fond du Lac team is aiming to get unsafe Child Passenger Safety (CPS) seats off the roads in our community through their car seat recycle day on Saturday, April 22, 2017.

“It is important to make sure your child is traveling in a safe car seat,” says Sarah Rhone RN, BSN, Safe Kids Fox Valley (SKFV) Coordinator. "If the seat is expired, it is unsafe to use and may not hold up in a crash." Plastic stresses and warps over time, especially with our Wisconsin climate changes. Also, the straps tend to fray or rip, and the important instructional labels fade, get torn off, or even fall off. Rhone states to especially be aware of these worn conditions when using a seat purchased second-hand.

The collection event will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2017, at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, 65 W. Scott Street in Fond du Lac, from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Car seats more than six years old, purchased at a garage sale or thrift store, involved in a car accident, or not needed will be taken apart and recycled or properly disposed.

“If a car seat was purchased from a garage sale, thrift store or other source in which the history is unknown, its frame may be compromised and unsafe for your child,” states Rhone. "We still see many seats in our communities that fit the descriptions explained above." SKFV along with community partners work hard to eliminate the use of these seats to keep our kids safe on the road.

This event is a partnership with the Safe Kids statewide initiative and Leadership Fond du Lac team members Troy Riehl, Habitat for Humanity ReStore; Kris Bosio, Mercury Marine; Katie Reinke, Agnesian HealthCare; Angela Boehning, Fox Valley Savings Bank; and Shelby Kapitanski, Fond du Lac County.
