YPWeek: Human Trafficking in Fond du Lac & Wisconsin

Cases of human trafficking have been identified in all 72 counties in Wisconsin. Yet most people doubt this, thinking “that can’t be happening here!” If we are in a state of denial, who is helping survivors? Who is working on policies? Who is educating young people about risks? In this talk, Rachel will address the myths and misconceptions around sex trafficking in Wisconsin, illuminate the situation in Wisconsin, and explain what led her to start the LOTUS (Legal Options for Trafficked and Underserved Survivors) legal clinic in 2013.

Note: For Parking—Parking for attendees is available in the St. Agnes Hospital visitor lot across from the main entrance or across Division Street in the main associate lot. Please do not park in the Emergency Department Lot as that is reserved for patients and families.

Meet the Presenter:
Rachel Monaco-Wilcox, JD, is an attorney, teacher, and mediator. Rachel is the CEO and founder of the LOTUS Legal clinic for victims of crime and human trafficking. She is Chair and Assistant Professor of the Justice Department at Mount Mary University in Milwaukee. Rachel is a frequent public speaker on issues of Elder Law, mediation, and human trafficking. She is a past Fulbright Scholar (modern Greek poetry), and practiced law at Foley and Lardner, Stephen M. Fisher & Associates, and Associated Wealth Management of Milwaukee in estate planning, probate, trusts, and tax. She received undergraduate honors degrees in English and Theology from Marquette University, and a law degree cum laude from Marquette University Law School. She was named as one of Milwaukee Business Journals “40 Under 40” in 2013, received the Wisconsin Association of Mediator’s Presidential Award in 2014, and received the THRIVE Award for survivor advocacy from the Aurora Health Care Foundation in 2015.
